“Fasting” by Richard Foster, Celebration of Discipline

It is sobering to realize that the very first statement Jesus made about fasting dealt with the question of motive (Matt 6:16-18). To use good things to our own ends is always the sign of false religion. How easy it is to take something like fasting and try to use it to get God to do what we want. At times there is such stress upon the blessing and benefits of fasting that we would be empted to believe that with a little fast we could have the world, including God, eating out of our hands.

Fasting must forever center on God. It must be God-initiated and God-ordained. Like the prophetess Anna, we need to be “worshipping and fasting” (Luke 2:37). Every other purpose must be subservient to God. Like the apostolic band at Antioch, “fasting” and “worshiping the Lord” must be said in the same breath (Acts 13:2). Charles Spurgeon writes, “Our seasons of fasting and prayer at the Tabernacle have been high days indeed; never has Heaven’s gate stood wider; never have our hearts been nearer the central Glory.”

God questioned the people in Zechariah’s day, “When ye fasted…did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?” (Zech 7:5). If our fasting is not unto God, we have failed. Physical benefits, success in prayer, the enduing with power, spiritual insights—these must never replace God as the center of our fasting. John Wesley declares, “First, let fasting be done unto the Lord with our eye singly fixed on Him. Let our intention herein be this, and this alone, to glorify our Father which is in Heaven…” That is the only way we will be saved from loving the blessing more than the Blesser.

Once the primary purpose of fasting is firmly fixed in our hearts, we are at liberty to understand that there are also secondary purposes in fasting. More than any other Discipline, fasting reveals the things that control us. This is a wonderful benefit to the true disciple who longs to be transformed into the image of Jesus Christ. We cover up what is inside us with food and other good things, but in fasting these things surface. If pride controls us, it will be revealed almost immediately. David writes, “I humble my soul with fasting.” (Ps. 69:10). Anger, bitterness, jealousy, strife, fear—if they are in us, they will surface during fasting. At first we rationalize that our anger is due to our hunger; then we will realize that we are angry because we have the spirit of anger within us. We can rejoice in this knowledge because we know that healing is available through Jesus.

Fasting reminds us that we are sustained “by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matt 4:4). Food does not sustain us; God sustains us. IN Christ, “All things hold together” (Col 1:17). Therefore, in experiences of fasting we are not so much abstaining from food as we are feasting on the word of God. FASTING IS FEASTING! When the disciples brought lunch to Jesus, assuming he was starving, he declared, “I have food to eat of which you do not know…My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work (John 4:32, 34).

Fasting helps us keep our balance in life. How easily we begin to allow nonessentials to take precedence in our lives. How quickly we crave things we do not need until they enslave us. Our human cravings and desires are like rivers that tend to overflow their banks; fasting helps keep them in their proper channels. Discipline brings freedom. In this, as in all matters, we can expect God to reward those who diligently seek Him.

Thank You

Thank you, everyone for the love and concern you’ve shown our family. Mary and the girls (Lauren & Leah) have great faith. Their faith and love and that of my family and friends, has sustained me during this 14 struggle with ALS. Part of me feels almost guilty for having survived this long with a disease that takes most victims in 3 to 5 years. But the rational part of me knows that my death wouldn’t lessen the grief of those who’ve lost loved ones to ALS and my longevity might bring hope to those now dealing with this horrible disease. Regardless, it isn’t really about me because everyone experiences difficult life-challenges and the severity of my trial doesn’t minimize the trials of others.
I know many of you that are praying for me are also going through various trials and I believe these trials have made you more humble and empathetic, as this trial has also done to me. So, while you’re praying for me, I will also be praying for you. Many of you know and love Mark Ragusa. Like me, Mark has a beautiful wife and two beautiful daughters that love him very much. I wish our similarities ended there, but recently Mark and Angela told us that he was diagnosed with ALS. Today (October 4th) is Mark’s birthday; please include him in your prayers. Again, thank you all for everything you’ve done and are doing for us.
We appreciate and love you,
Bill

Fasting

I got these great fasting resources from my church!

“Is this not the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? –Isaiah 58:6

Prayer Points for Corporate Fasting

Read Isaiah 58 and Matthew 6:16-18 every day of the fast.

Examples of fasting: Matthew 4:2, Acts 13:2, 14:23, Daniel 9:3

· Prayer and fasting go hand-in-hand! Pray every time you desire what you are fasting from.

· God speaks to us clearly when we focus on Him in prayer and fasting!

· Worship God out of a thankful heart while fasting!

· Check the attitude of your heart! Phil. 2:14-16

Tips for fasting

· Make a commitment and stick to it. Daniel 1:8

· Be accountable to someone. Proverbs 27:17

· Drink a lot of water and rest.

· Set aside time to pray and worship. Acts 13:2-3

How To Pray

Many people ask, "How should I pray!?"

Matthew 6:9 says,
"Pray then like this:
'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven..."

So many times we (passively) pray, "Your will be done, Lord..." but leave out the most strategic and vital part:
"...on earth AS IT IS IN HEAVEN."

In heaven, there is NO sickness, no disease. We are called to pray heaven on earth. What do we have to lose by praying BIG prayers like this? I don't know exactly what the Lord has planned for this corporate fasting and prayer, but what I do know is that He will bless our faith and belief that He is the HEALER and is pleased with the more faith we have in Him.

Sidenote I just realized: We are fasting 6 days=Matthew 6

Hello!

After a stirring in my spirit and countless confirmations from God and others, I am going to be fasting and praying from October 5 through October 10 for my Daddy, Bill Sweeney and want YOU to join me! Many of you have been interceding for Daddy's healing ever since he was diagnosed with ALS (Lougherig's Disease), 14 years ago. He was given 3 years to live-but God has proven once again his miraculous power and Dad has outlived 95% of ALS patients! Many of you have had prophetic dreams and visions of Bill WALKING and HEALED! To increase your faith: there has been an INCREASE of these dreams over this summer and even MORE in the past week!

I also know that fasting will look different for everyone during this time; For me, I will be fasting fully at least one day and either doing a Daniel fast or drinking juice, etc. I am still praying about specifics :) In addition, I will be reading Matthew 8 and 9 everyday of the fasting.

For the past 2 months, the phrases "Healing is on the Rise" and "Advance the Troops" is on my heart constantly. We live in the enemy's territory, but the One who is named Faithful and True calls us to TAKE OVER what the enemy's territory-not after Jesus returns but NOW. I believe this time of fasting and prayer is more than Bill Sweeney being healed; my dad is merely a byproduct and catalyst for the breakthrough and anointing the Lord wants us to receive. After all, who can teach people to stand and live by Faith more than my dad? HA! Jesus told me, "I am not interested in an outcome-not as interested in physical manifestation-as I am in YOU gaining the heart of WHO I am!" We are in a season of ABUNDANCE, and He has called us to an Abundant life and nothing less. "...so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed." -Luke 5:15-16

No king is saved by the size of his army;
no warrior escapes by his great strength.
A horse is a vain hope for deliverance;
despite all its great strength it cannot save.
But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him,
on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,
to deliver them from death
and keep them alive in famine.
-Psalm 33:16-19

NOTE: My dad's 50th birthday is October 5 (he wasn't even supposed to see his 40th!) AND "10-10-10" will be the ending of this praying and fasting.

During this time, you can email my dad encouragement, prayers, dreams, or anything the Lord speaks to you.
His email:
bsweeney60@aol.com or find him on facebook: Bill Sweeney.

I AM EXCITED-with Excited Expectancy!
Love,
Lauren

Very encouraging and faith-building video!

“…looking at them Jesus said to them, "With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." (Matt 19:26)

“…if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!" And Jesus said to him, " "If You can?' All things are possible to him who believes." (Mark 9:23)

“…(Jesus) said, "The things that are impossible with people are possible with God." (Luke 18:27)
